May 25. 2010

The Cantabile Choirs were awarded Outstanding Choral Event by the Association of Canadian Choral Communities for the opening concert of its current 2009-10 season, “Brown Eagle, Black Raven.”  The award was presented at the final banquet at Podium, the biennial conference of the Association held in Saskatoon on Saturday May 22.  The evening was a tribute to the aboriginal cultures of the world with special guests, Inuit cultural performers "Nukariik."  In citing the award, the Association commended the Cantabile organization for its commitment to adventuresome repertoire, innovative programming and high standard of performance and in particular, for the effort to educate both choristers and audience on world cultures.

In addition, Cantabile's Artistic Director Dr. Mark Sirett won the award for Outstanding Choral Composition for "The Stars Point the Way" written for the award-winning Cantilon Choirs of Edmonton under the direction of Heather Johnson.  These choirs won First Prize in the Equal-voice Category of the Canadian Choral Competition for Amateur Choirs and will be heard on CBC's Choral Concert in future weeks.

The Cantabile Choirs have been recognized at a national and international level for its creative programming.  Its Artistic Director, Mark Sirett won the Jury Award for Imaginative Programming and Artistry at the Cork International Choral Festival in 2002, Ireland.

Cantabile's final concert of the current season will be this Saturday, May 29th at 7:30 when the choirs are joined by the Greg Runions Trio in Blue Moon.  The concert will include hits from the 50s, 60s, and beyond including tunes by the Beatles, Billy Joel, and Leonard Cohen.  Tickets are available at the Grand Theatre Box Office and at the door.
