KINGSTON FOLK CLUB: Sunday, June 6

Hosted by Chris Morris - every even-numbered Sunday!

RCHA Club, 193 Ontario Street @ Clarence, 3rd floor.

This week's feature act: Jon McLurg

Is it cliché to say that Jon McLurg is the most talented songwriter you’ve never heard of? Perhaps. Does that make it any less true? Certainly not.

With a contemplative wisdom that belies his 26 years, he spins songs of truth, reflection, melancholy, contentment, and spirituality.

"Passion is the power that makes the world go ‘round/ Power is the passion that slowly drives it down/ Destiny’s a diamond on the wrong side of town/ It takes a hungry eye to even see it"

Jon’s sophomore CD, The Auctioneer, was recorded not far from his hometown of Elginburg, Ontario (20 km north of Kingston) at Leopard Frog Studios by Chris Coleman (www.leopardfrogstudio.com) and features the musical talents of Coleman himself, Chris Murphy, Kelli Trottier, and Terry Tufts, among others. The CD runs the gamut of tones and emotions, from the lively anthem Old Montreal to the delicate Oldest Promise and culminates in the gentle yet epic last track, Big Band Theory, an alternate allegory for the Creation story:

"Our world began when a man took the hand/ Of a girl to a dance to hear a big band/ The old Palais floor shook the dust from the door/ Like never before/

"So strike up the band start something new/ >From the trumpeter’s lips a giant star flew/ And it came undone and there was the sun/ For me and for you"

Influenced by the music of John Prine, Hank Williams, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, Jon has entered into the realm of the songwriter with class, abundant talent, and wit, and his soft but smooth voice and elegant finger-style guitar playing has proven to be the perfect vehicle for his songs.
